Random thoughts from the Basement.
Published on August 17, 2003 By Grog In WinCustomize Talk
The recent discussion about whether or not to increase the level of moderation of the Wallpaper section here at Wincustomize got me thinking of writing this thread, and a couple of other threads recently solidified the thought. The subject of wallpapers that were wholly or partially created in Bryce comes up from time to time. Bryce just like any other graphics program is just like all the rest, capable of creating magic and spectacular trash, but unlike the rest Bryce has a very easy early learning curve. The easy initial learning curve of Bryce is as much a blessing as a curse. Anyone with only a couple of hours of playing around can create a picture that screams “Wow, I can’t believe that I just made this”, but then the real learning curve starts to rear its head. One trip into the Deep Texture Editor is enough to send a novice screaming back to the presets, the huge render times cause second thoughts about turning on Volumetric Lighting. The true potential of Bryce is in the scarier depths of the program hidden behind the initial interface. Below I’m going to list a few of the Artists that have reached the absolute pinnacle of the possibilities of Bryce, and a list of tutorials that will help the novice Bryce user on the path to making magic with this program.

The Masters:

Bill Munns http://www.billmunnsgallery.com/
Martin Murphy's http://members.attcanada.ca/~m.murphy/
Kelly McLarnon http://topazdesigns.com/~klm/
Susan Kitchens http://www.auntialias.com/
Sylvia Lutnes http://www.thecricketcage.com/
Peter Sharpe http://www.petersharpe.com/
Steve Lareau http://www.hilltopdesign.com
Jac Grenfell http://www.jacgrenfell.com/
Jeff Richardson http://website.lineone.net/~morgoth/FullAwardListing.htm

The sites that I have just listed are the cream of the crop, but just like with every other program they didn’t start there, a ton of hard work and practice were required to make more than shinny spheres and blue crystal dolphins. Below are just a few of the hundred of tutorial sites and resources that are available on line. But first I have to mention THE book when it comes to learning Bryce, Susan A. Kitchens wrote “Real World Bryce 2” a number of years ago, and more recently “Real World Bryce 4” either one is a must have for anyone wanting to learn Bryce. You can get a copy at most book stores or at Amazon and it is worth every penny.

Take some time to do a Google search for “Bryce Tutorials” and you will find a Bryce tutorial for anything that you would or could want to create. No Bryce will never be one of the super high end graphics programs, BUT considering you can find Free copies of Bryce 2 or 3 and possibly 4 coming on cover CD’s for magazines like “Computer Arts” from the UK, and you can find the older versions of Bryce on line for 20 or 30 dollars. If you like the older version, almost all are eligible for the Upgrade price to Bryce 5. I’m not sure but even though I have a good job, I know I will never be able to purchase a copy of Max, Lightwave or Vue, so it is a great option for those who just want a hobby that won’t break the bank.

To tie this all together, take some time and make life easier on the fantastic moderators we have here at Wincusto and take the fuel away from the Anti-Bryce gang, by pushing into the deeper corners of Bryce and learn to make Magic.

Chris

Great post Chris.
I remember when I got my copy of Bryce and created my 1st metal sphere over an ocean plain with a little mountain in the background. I thoght I was Bryce 'God'
But as you said, some people wont go any further than the primitives and preset images, textures and plains. So they never give it a chance to see all the amazing things that can actually be achived with this program.
Maybe they'll look into this thread and the links and get motivated.
By the way, you forgot to put my name on the list

Apocalypse, I'm ever so sorry I forgot you on the list

Kona, Yes Digital Blasphemy does use Bryce, along with a number of other programs. Digital Blasphemy even has a Bryce Tutorials page http://www.digitalblasphemy.com/tutorial/

Our own MobiusCO uses Bryce to create most of his wallpapers and most people would never guess that his work was done in Bryce http://www.mobiusco.com/

Along time ago one of my wifes friends saw a picture that I had done in Bryce and told her that she would like a copy of it. So my wife had me print it out on the best paper I had and put it in a frame to give to her. Well you can guess, a jumping blue crystal dolphin featured prominently with a very large moon on the horizon. I thought I had made something fantastic till I saw all of the other "crystal blue jumping dolphins" but it is a stage that I think every one who uses Bryce goes through.

Here's a challenge for anyone that thinks that they have "Leet" bryce skills, make a Windowblinds skin just using Bryce. Say it can't be done, well check out Kelly McLarnon's site listed above. Her interfaces are almost all done in Bryce. I tried to do this once, and failed, but then again I'm not "Leet"

Grog heads off to PT

Excellent, make this one sticky.

My old wb skins 'Golden Touch' and 'Watery' was made in bryce. Those weren't greatest skins however.

All of my wallpapers are made by bryce. Hmm I really should find and re-upload my The Temple wallaper. That's my best work yet.

Anyone with only a couple of hours of playing around can create a picture that screams “Wow, I can’t believe that I just made this

but they did`nt make it bryce did all they did was click a few buttons

and take the fuel away from the Anti-Bryce gang, by pushing into the deeper corners of Bryce and learn to make Magic.

not anti-bryce but has been stated over and over again, it must be in the right hands for anyone to consider themselves an artist when using such programes, and i know that there are many at WC that come into both the artist and the dreamers...
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK THOSE WHO DO..

xoxroth: That was my point of the entire post, to try and give a little nudge in the right direction for anyone who wants to use Bryce. That is why I said that the initial learning curve for Bryce is both a Blessing and a Curse. A blessing because it can keep you motivated at the beginning, where most graphics programs seem to try and prevent you from learning at the start. A curse because you have the desire to show what you made to everyone. My comment about the "Anti-Bryce" gang is that lately it seems is that all someone has to do is mention that a picture was made even partially in Bryce and they get jumped all over. I'm sorry but I have seen more than enough crummy walls made in Max and Lightwave to last a life time. It is the person behind the program that makes a Wall good or bad not the software that is used. Constructive criticism is always welcome criticism just for the sake of criticism is not.

Grog... if you would be so kind as to post this on the "Skinning" board, I'll make it sticky.

Kona...DigitalBlasphemy gave up on Bryce a long time ago...You won't find much work from him done in Bryce.

His program of choice is 'Lightwave'

Along with a couple others
